REX Demo: Privacy Policy
Last updated: September 2026
The REX Demo browser extension (“the extension”) is published by the Behavioral Research Innovation Center, Inc. (BRIC), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. This policy explains what the extension accesses, where that information goes, and how to delete it.
What this extension is
Section titled “What this extension is”The extension is a demonstration of the REX extension building framework, BRIC’s open-source tool for building research browser extensions. It shows researchers what a data donation extension can collect and how lists can limit that collection. It is not a research study and is not intended for large-scale deployment to study participants.
Your data stays on your computer
Section titled “Your data stays on your computer”Everything the extension collects is stored only in your browser’s local storage on your computer. The extension does not send any of it to BRIC or to anyone else. BRIC does not receive, see, or store your data. The extension contains no analytics, advertising, or tracking.
What the extension accesses
Section titled “What the extension accesses”- Browsing history. The extension reads up to 90 days of your browser history. Allow and block lists decide how each visit is recorded: in full (address and page title), reduced to just the website’s domain, or, for sites on a block list, only the time of the visit and the list’s category label (for example, “social”), with no address, title, or domain. Every visit keeps its timestamp.
- YouTube. On YouTube, the extension shows its “friction” demonstration: a 3-second blur with an explanatory banner when a page loads. It records the time and address of each blur locally. It does not run on any other website.
- Study ID. When the extension is installed, it creates a random study ID (such as
rex-demo-3f9a1c0e) and stores it locally. Each installation gets its own ID, so data from different installations stays separate. The ID is not linked to your identity. - Your list changes. Changes you make in the list editor are stored locally.
Network connections
Section titled “Network connections”The extension does not contact any outside site on its own.
Downloading your data
Section titled “Downloading your data”You can download everything the extension has collected as a JSON file. Once downloaded, that file is yours, and what happens to it is up to you.
Deleting your data
Section titled “Deleting your data”- Click Clear All Data on the extension’s home screen to delete everything it has collected.
- Uninstalling the extension deletes all of its stored data.
Sharing and sale
Section titled “Sharing and sale”BRIC does not sell, share, or transfer your data, because BRIC never receives it. The use of information by this extension complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Children
Section titled “Children”The extension is intended for researchers and is not directed to children under 13.
Changes to this policy
Section titled “Changes to this policy”If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted at this address with a new “Last updated” date.
